Bioinformatics MSc/Diploma

  microarray clustering

The Bioinformatics MSc/Diploma course is a one year Masters degree based in the School of Biological Sciences, University of Edinburgh.

The subject of bioinformatics is fundamentally about application of computer-based approaches in order to help understand biological processes. Modern high throughput technologies such as genome sequencing, next-generation sequencing and microarray profiling are widely applied to biological problems and generate huge amounts of data. The aim of this MSc/Diploma course is to equip students with a strong background in biology with the skills and tools necessary to make sense of the wealth of available biological data.

The main components of the course are:-

  • Programming in Java and with Bio-Languages
  • Advanced use of Bioinformatics tools
  • Advanced analysis of microarray and next-generation sequencing data
  • Statistical Analysis
  • Structural Biology
  • Population and evolutionary genetics, phylogeny
